A look at weeks 9 through 12

Month 3 (weeks 9–12) closes the first trimester. The fetus takes on a human shape and miscarriage risk drops sharply after week 12.

Key changes this month

  • Weeks 9–10: fingers and toes separate; external genitalia begin to form.
  • Morning sickness usually peaks and begins to subside.
  • Nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound at 11–13+6 weeks for chromosomal risk.
