Fetal development
- Reflexes develop — the fetus opens and closes its hands.
- Bones start hardening.
- External genitals begin to form, though too small for ultrasound to identify sex reliably.
Maternal changes
- Miscarriage risk is much lower compared to early pregnancy.
- A handheld Doppler can usually pick up the fetal heartbeat.
