Fetal development

  • Reflexes develop — the fetus opens and closes its hands.
  • Bones start hardening.
  • External genitals begin to form, though too small for ultrasound to identify sex reliably.

Maternal changes

  • Miscarriage risk is much lower compared to early pregnancy.
  • A handheld Doppler can usually pick up the fetal heartbeat.
