Fetal development

  • Vernix caseosa, a creamy protective coating, starts covering the skin.
  • Taste, smell, sight, hearing, and touch nerves are taking shape.
  • Motor neurons in the brain develop.

Maternal changes

  • Stretching abdominal ligaments may cause sudden, sharp side pains (round ligament pain).
  • Vivid dreams and lighter sleep are common.

Recommended checkups

  • Anatomy scan window (typically weeks 19–22) — fetal sex can often be identified.
